Not every plumbing issue needs a pro—sometimes, a little DIY can save the day.

Let’s be real—plumbing problems don’t always show up Monday morning during business hours. They hit on Sunday night during the game, or when your in-laws are about to arrive. If you’re in Caddo Mills, Rockwall, or anywhere across the DFW Metroplex, you’ve probably had a moment where you wondered:

“Can I fix this myself, or do I need to call Military Plumbing?”

We’re not the type of company to upsell you on a job you could’ve handled with a wrench and a little know-how. In fact, we’re happy to walk you through a few simple DIY plumbing fixes that might save you time and money.

But we’ll also be honest about the moments when it’s best to set the tools down and call in backup.

1. Clogged Sink or Shower Drain

Fix It Yourself Tip:

Try removing the drain cover and pulling out visible hair or debris (gloves recommended!). Then, use a plunger to loosen minor blockages. You can also pour a mix of baking soda and vinegar, followed by hot water, to help break things up.

Avoid using harsh chemical drain cleaners—they can eat away at your pipes over time.

Call a Pro If:

  • Water backs up immediately

  • You’ve tried plunging and natural solutions with no results

  • It’s affecting multiple drains (may signal a deeper main line issue)

We offer drain cleaning & hydro jetting that can clear even the toughest blockages—fast and safe.

2. Running Toilet

Fix It Yourself Tip:

If your toilet keeps running after flushing, it’s usually a flapper issue. Open the tank, check if the flapper is sealing properly, and make sure the chain isn’t too short or too long.

Call a Pro If:

  • The tank won’t fill

  • Water is leaking from the base

  • You’ve replaced parts but the issue keeps coming back

3. Low Water Pressure

Fix It Yourself Tip: Start by cleaning faucet aerators and showerheads—mineral buildup is common in Texas. Soak them in vinegar overnight and scrub gently.

Call a Pro If:

  • The issue affects multiple fixtures

  • Pressure swings between hot and cold

  • You suspect a leak in the system

We offer water pressure testing & adjustment for reliable performance.

4. Garbage Disposal Not Working

Fix It Yourself Tip:

If it hums but won’t spin, turn off power and press the reset button underneath. Still jammed? Use a hex key to manually turn the blades from the bottom. Never put your hands inside!

Call a Pro If:

  • It’s leaking underneath

  • You hear loud grinding noises

  • It trips your breaker repeatedly

We offer garbage disposal repair and replacement services that are quick and dependable.

5. No Hot Water

Fix It Yourself Tip:

Check the breaker for electric units or the pilot light for gas heaters. Reset or relight it safely following your manufacturer’s instructions.

Call a Pro If:

  • You see water pooling at the base

  • The pilot won’t stay lit

  • You hear strange noises like popping or banging

We specialize in water heater repair & tankless upgrades throughout North Texas.

6. Outdoor Faucet Leaks

Fix It Yourself Tip:

Tighten fittings or replace washers if water leaks from the handle or spout. These often wear out after harsh Texas winters or dry summers.

Call a Pro If:

  • Leaks continue after replacing parts

  • Pipes froze and cracked during winter

  • Water backs up into the house

We handle outdoor plumbing repairs, frost-proof spigots, and more.
